I miss my grandparents. I miss the sleepovers, the special meals, the laughter, the tears, and all the advice they gave me over the years. They were a huge part of my life. It was (and still is) an honor to be their granddaughter. We didn’t have a Grandparents Day when I was growing up. If we did, nobody told me about it. If mine were still alive, I would certainly find a way to make them feel special on Grandparents Day.
If your grandparents are still alive, there are several things you can do to celebrate Grandparents Day with them:
Go see them. If you are an adult, your grandparents probably don’t see you as often as they did when you were younger. They miss you. Go visit them. The best thing you can give them is your time.
Take them their favorite meal. My grandparents loved to eat. In fact, there was always food in their houses. No matter what time of day it was, you were always welcomed with food. I’m not talking about a ham sandwich. I’m talking about FOOD – a real home-cooked meal – meat, vegetables, homemade biscuits, and your favorite desert. Oh, and you HAD to eat whether you were hungry or not. If you didn’t eat something, you would hurt their feelings. Maybe this is a southern thing. I don’t know. Either way, take them a meal. Better yet, stay and eat it with them.
Do something with them. If your grandparents are still active, take them to a park or someplace they like to go. If they are not so active, stay home and play a game with them. Think of something they love to do and do it with them. Enjoy the day. Make lifelong memories. One day, the memories are all you’ll have.
Make them something special. They love handmade gifts. This is true no matter how young or old you are. They never get tired of receiving gifts their children and grandchildren have made especially for them. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. Feel free to keep it simple. They’ll love it no matter what it is because you made it.
