This is what the Lord says— he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. – Isaiah 43:16, 18-19 (NIV)
Isaiah 43:16 is a perfect verse to start a new year. Past experiences can haunt us. Memories of things gone wrong can make us feel defeated. Current consequences resulting from past mistakes can make us feel hopeless. Dwelling on past sins can make us feel unworthy of the forgiveness that Jesus offers.
God in His Word tells us to:
Forget the former things.
Stop dwelling on the past.
focus on the new thing.
Isaiah 43 tells us that God is at work in us, doing a new thing in our lives. If we dwell on the past, we rob ourselves of the blessings of the present.
My New Year prayer for you is that you will forget the former things that haunt you and that God will show you the new thing He is doing in your life. May you live each day in the joy of the promises of the One who makes a way in the wilderness and streams in the wastelands.
Wherever you were in 2017, know that God met you there. Perhaps He placed you there. He will take you to new places and He will do new things in 2018.
