We Are Made In God’s Image: Our Identity in Christ

We are made in God's image. Woman praying with light shining on her face.
We are made in God’s image.

At the beginning of the book of Genesis, we read that we are made in God’s image. Read that again. We are made in God’s image. When I rest on that verse for a minute, its significance begins to sink in, but still, it’s such a profound truth. Of all creation, we humans get the unique privilege of being made in God’s image. This foundational truth sets the stage for understanding our worth, purpose, and relationship with our Creator God.

So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Genesis 1:27 (NASB)

We Are Made in God’s Image

The fact that we are made in the image of God speaks directly to our value. It means we bear a reflection of God’s nature. As believers, it speaks to our spiritual and moral capacity. We can love, reason, create, and connect with others. We were not made for isolation. We were made for community. Every human being possesses inherent dignity because we are created by God and after God Himself. This is the reason I am 100% pro-life. Every human being is created by God, and every life begins at conception.

I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.

Psalm 139:14 (NASB)

Recognizing Our Worth and the Worth of Others

When we recognize our own worth because we are made in God’s image, we can also recognize the value of others. We live in a world currently divided by so many differences. We are divided by politics, various moral beliefs and convictions, differing socioeconomic statuses, and the list can go on, but when we recognize one another’s value in the heart of our Creator God, we can respect the value of others even if we can’t agree on everything. When we look at others, we should remember that God created them in His image, too. Only believers are called God’s children. I want to make that point clear, but we are all created in His image.

When speaking about believers, Paul wrote:

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 3:28 (NASB)

Made in God’s Image: Our Common Identity as Believers

The common identity believers share as image-bearers of God should encourage us to recognize our deep connection, resulting in deeper relationships with other born-again believers.

If you are reading this post, and you are not a believer, or you don’t know what I mean when I refer to those who have a born-again relationship with Jesus Christ, please go here to learn more.

As image-bearers of God, we are given the responsibility of stewardship. We are called to care for and protect the world around us. We are responsible for the rest of God’s creation. Because we are created in God’s image, we are responsible for ruling over every other living thing that moves on the earth.

God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Genesis 1:28 (NASB)

Our Responsibility As Image Bearers of God

When we are kind to others and care for our environment, we represent our Creator God. When we forgive those who have wronged us, we represent our Creator God.

Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

Ephesians 4:32

Recognizing our identity in Christ as beloved children made in God’s image changes how we think of ourselves and others. In Christ, our failures and insecurities do not define us. Instead, our identity is rooted in God, knowing He sees us as His precious creations.

Made in God’s Image: God’s Love for You

The enemy of God, Satan, wants us to believe we are worthless, but God taught us our value when He sent His only Son to suffer and die in our place, taking our sin upon Himself and then rising again to prepare a place for those of us who have received the gift of salvation to live in eternity too. If you don’t understand what I mean by that, go here to learn more.

Are you ready to recognize God’s love for you? Are you ready to become a child of God through salvation? Go here to understand how you can have a deep relationship with God through Jesus. I pray you will make that decision today.
